Audio Fidelity in the USA and Pye in Britain were responsible for issuing the first stereo two channel records in 1958. In mono the stylus moves horizontally but in stereo the stylus also moves vertically. Each of the channels drives the cutting head at a 45 degree angle. The playback turntable stylus will read the combined signal of the left channel that is diagonally opposite of the inner side of the groove, and the right channel which is opposite of the outer side of the groove.
